Warosoku and E-rosoku - Traditional Japanese Candles

The history of warosoku (traditional Japanese candles) began in the Muromachi period, reached its peak during the Edo period, and began to decline in the Meiji era with the introduction of inexpensive Western paraffin wax (the standard material for candles today).

Yet, the solemn and fluctuating flame-sometimes large, sometimes small-created by plant-based wax derived from haze (wax tree) seeds, combined with a core made by wrapping washi paper with the pith of igusa (used in tatami mats), embodies the essence of wabi-sabi in Japanese culture. Even now, these candles are indispensable in Japan's shrines and temples, kabuki theaters, and tea ceremony settings, carrying on their legacy to this day.

E-rosoku (hand-painted candles) also trace their origins to the Edo period. During the winter, when fresh flowers were difficult to obtain, these candles were used as substitutes for floral offerings at Buddhist altars. As reflected in the term kashoku no ten (a poetic phrase describing wedding celebrations), they have also been used in joyful occasions such as weddings.

Please enjoy the profound glow and ornamental beauty of warosoku-a true expression of Japanese tradition and aesthetics.

Secure the candle firmly in a holder. To prevent fire hazards, keep flammable items away and avoid using it in unattended areas.

Ensure the candleholder is dry before use. Moisture can cause the candle to crack or burst.

The wick, traditionally made by wrapping washi paper with igusa lampwick or a paper core, may become long after 20-30 minutes. Trim the wick around the center with scissors. This also helps prevent ash from scattering and allows for easier relighting.

Use in a wind-free location. Strong airflow can create soot and uneven melting, preventing complete combustion.

Regular trimming ensures a clean, steady flame and improves relighting efficiency.
