    This Kurume Kasuri fabric is woven on a retro Showa-era belt-driven power loom, where twenty looms are operated by a single motor.
    Founded in 1948, the mill is a long-established producer of Kurume Kasuri, one of Japan's representative traditional yarn-dyed textiles.
    The fabric has a soft texture that closely resembles handwoven cloth.
    Because many processes are performed by hand, it takes more than 30 steps and 2 to 4 months to complete one roll.
    After weaving, each bolt is washed in hot water and naturally sun-dried, shrinking by about 10%.
    This textile is ideal for those who want to create a special piece with traditional Japanese craftsmanship.


    This design features bokashi-shima, stripes arranged so the colors gradually shift using different tones of the same color family.
    The word shima (stripe) originates from vertically striped fabrics brought from overseas during the Nanban trade period. These were called shimamono - meaning"goods brought from the islands" - and later evolved into shima during the Edo period.
