This textile features a special Kurume Kasuri colorway designed by Aki Watanuki exclusively for Shimogawa Orimono. The design was showcased at the Paris Design Week Factory exhibition in September 2022.

Inspired by the theme"RESONANCE franco-japonaises," the collaboration brings together two textile designers - Aki Watanuki and Cecile Vignau - who met at ENSCI - Les Ateliers, France's national school of industrial design. Their collaborative Kurume Kasuri works were exhibited at Galerie Josephe in the Marais district (September 8 - 12, 2022).

Title of work: *Komoriuta - Berceuse* (2022)
In 2020, Watanuki relocated from France to Hirokawa Town, home to the largest number of Kurume Kasuri weaving studios. Through conversations with artisans, she learned that"in the old days, mothers worked in the mills while caring for their children, and the sound of the looms was like a lullaby."
This story inspired her design. Using contrasting colors in warp and weft to create a soft impression, she combined the traditional *asanoha* motif (symbolizing prayers for children's growth) with zigzag patterns reminiscent of factory iconography. The design is an homage to the looms'"lullaby," to Kurume Kasuri, and to the artisans who carry this tradition forward.

Kurume Kasuri is woven on retro belt-driven power looms from the Showa era, with twenty looms operated by a single motor. Founded in 1948, Shimogawa Orimono continues to produce one of Japan's most iconic yarn-dyed textiles. The fabric is known for its soft, handwoven-like texture. Because many processes are done manually, production involves more than thirty steps and takes two to four months to complete.
This textile is ideal for those who wish to create pieces rooted in traditional Japanese craftsmanship.

This textile features *tateyoko-gasuri*, a method that expresses patterns through the overlapping of both warp and weft ikat threads. Kurume is the last remaining production area that continues to weave tateyoko-gasuri on power looms. With both mechanized tying techniques and the skills of expert artisans, Kurume Kasuri is regarded as one of the highest forms of ikat weaving in the world.

*Tsumami-zome* is a technique in which selected parts of the white kasuri pattern are hand-dyed to add color accents. Although it has long existed in Kurume Kasuri, the work is labor-intensive and can only be applied to limited designs. Today, only a few artisans are capable of performing this technique, making it increasingly rare.

The *asanoha* (hemp leaf) motif symbolizes vitality, rapid growth, and protection from harm. Historically used for infants' clothing, it is believed to ward off evil. In kabuki, the pattern is associated with femininity and is thought to carry meanings of empowerment and beauty.
