A collection of twenty looms, linked by a single motor, operates these retro Showa-era belt-driven power looms. Established in 1948, Kurume Kasuri is a representative traditional pre-dyed woven textile of Japan. It boasts a soft texture reminiscent of handwoven fabrics and undergoes a meticulous manual process, taking 2 to 4 months and spanning over 30 steps for completion. This fabric is perfectly suited for individuals aiming to craft meticulously detailed traditional Japanese textiles.
[Weaving Characteristics]
The hallmark of Kurume Kasuri lies in its utilization of the "kukuri" technique to create patterns. The "kukuri yarn" is employed during the tying process, primarily using thicker cotton yarn like 20/4. After the tying process, the tied areas resist dye absorption, resulting in kasuri patterns. The purpose of the kukuri yarn concludes once the dyeing is done. The dyed kukuri yarn forms unique mottled patterns. Additionally, the kukuri yarn is repurposed as warp threads, yielding a sturdy fabric with substantial thickness suitable for various applications, including outerwear and accessories. The use of thicker cotton yarn ensures resilience against friction and durability.
Please take note that the warp threads exhibit irregular variations.
