Made in Japan
Kurume Kasuri is a retro belt-driven power loom weaving style, where 20 looms are connected to a single motor and operated together. It was established in Showa 23 (1948) and is a representative traditional pre-dyed fabric of Japan. Its characteristic is the soft and handwoven-like texture, achieved through numerous manual processes. It takes 2 to 4 months to complete, involving more than 30 different steps.
[Plain Kurume Kasuri]
One of the distinctive features of Kurume Kasuri is the technique called "kukuri," which allows for a wide range of patterns. Even when woven using power looms, the fabric retains a unique softness reminiscent of handwoven textiles. Throughout processes such as warping, weaving, and finishing, the artisans minimize stress on the threads, employing many manual techniques. The resulting texture is a testament to the craftsmanship passed down from generation to generation. Although plain and striped fabrics skip the "kukuri" process, they are still woven with the same care and attention by the skilled artisans. This is why the softness of plain fabrics is highly appreciated by many enthusiasts.
[About Slub]
Slub refers to a type of fancy yarn, often interpreted as a decorative thread with a design element. It involves creating longer and relatively larger bumps (slubs) at various points along the yarn, giving the fabric a characteristic spotted appearance.
