Kurume Kasuri is a traditional pre-dyed woven fabric, characterized by a retro belt-driven power loom system where 20 looms are connected to a single motor. Founded in 1948 during the Showa era, Kurume Kasuri is a cornerstone of Japanese heritage, featuring a soft texture reminiscent of handwoven textiles. Its production involves extensive manual processes, taking 2 to 4 months to complete over 30 intricate steps. [Weaving Characteristics]
Kurume Kasuri utilizes the "Yoko Kasuri" technique, where patterns are created using the tying (kukuri) technique for weft threads (yokoito). This allows for high artistic freedom in pattern expression, encompassing floral motifs and polka dots, often referred to as "Egasuri." The process involves winding weft threads onto a wooden device called "Tong," adjusting patterns meticulously using a specialized power loom.
