[About Kurume Kasuri]
Kurume Kasuri is a traditional pre-dyed fabric produced by a collection of 20 retro Showa-era belt-type power looms connected to a single motor. The weaving workshop was established in 1948, representing one of Japan's finest traditional pre-dyed fabrics. It is a representative example of Japan's traditional pre-dyed textiles. Kurume Kasuri is known for its soft and handwoven-like texture, similar to handwoven fabrics. The production process involves a substantial amount of manual work, taking 2 to 4 months to complete with over 30 steps. After weaving, the fabric is treated with hot-water shrinking and natural drying, resulting in approximately 10% shrinkage. [Characteristics of the Weaving]
The term "stripe" ("shima" in Japanese) originally referred to cotton fabric with vertical stripes imported from foreign countries through Nanban trade. It was called "shima-mono" (island fabric) because it was brought from distant lands ("shima") and later came to be known as "stripe" during the Edo period.

The term "Ha" (feathers) refers to a unit of counting threads used by the kasuri artisans, where 2 threads are counted as "1 Ha".
