[About Kurume Kasuri]
Kurume Kasuri is a traditional pre-dyed woven fabric, produced by a retro-style, belt-driven power loom with twenty connected machines driven by a single motor. Founded in 1948, the Kurume Kasuri textile mill represents the spirit of Japan and is known for its soft and handwoven-like texture.
The weaving technique features a striped pattern known as "Shima" in Japanese. The term "stripe" ("shima" in Japanese) originally referred to cotton fabric with vertical stripes imported from foreign countries through Nanban trade. It was called "shima-mono" (island fabric) because it was brought from distant lands ("shima") and later came to be known as "stripe" during the Edo period.
The fabric's unique characteristics are achieved through the use of fine-threaded vertical yarns (60/2) and thick-threaded horizontal yarns (10/1 Largo), emphasizing the softness and texture of the horizontal yarns.
