[About Kurume Kasuri]
Kurume Kasuri is a traditional Japanese pre-dyed woven fabric that has its roots in the Kurume Kasuri Weaving Workshop, founded in 1948. The workshop operates a unique setup of 20 looms connected to a single motor, creating a nostalgic and retro atmosphere reminiscent of the Showa era (1926-1989). With its establishment in the 23rd year of the Showa period (1948), the workshop holds a significant place in preserving Japanese heritage as a representative producer of traditional pre-dyed woven textiles.
This fabric is characterized by its soft and pliable texture, which closely resembles handwoven textiles. The production process involves a significant amount of manual labor, with more than 30 intricate steps requiring 2 to 4 months to complete. As a result, Kurume Kasuri is an excellent choice for those seeking to create meticulously crafted items that encapsulate the essence of traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
[Weaving Characteristics]
A distinctive feature of Kurume Kasuri is its utilization of only warp threads (tate ito) to create intricate patterns. This technique, known as "tate kasuri," is also referred to as "ita kasuri" or "board kasuri."
