[About Kurume Kasuri]
Kurume Kasuri is a traditional Japanese pre-dyed woven fabric that hails from the Kurume Kasuri Weaving Workshop, founded in 1948. This workshop operates a unique setup where 20 looms are linked to a single motor, creating a retro-style belt-driven power weaving system reminiscent of the Showa era. The workshop's legacy dates back to the 23rd year of the Showa period (1948), and it is renowned for producing iconic, tradition-rich, pre-dyed woven textiles.
Notable for its soft and pliable texture reminiscent of handwoven materials, Kurume Kasuri embodies a delicate craftsmanship process. With over 30 intricate steps involved, it takes 2 to 4 months to produce. This makes it an ideal choice for individuals seeking to create meticulously crafted, tradition-steeped pieces.
[Weaving Characteristics]
Kurume Kasuri is characterized by its use of only warp threads (tate ito) to create intricate patterns. This technique, known as "tate kasuri," is also referred to as "ita kasuri" or "board kasuri."
