Kurume Kasuri is a traditional Japanese pre-dyed woven fabric produced by Kurume Kasuri Orimoto, established in 1948. It features a retro-style belt-driven power loom setup with 20 interconnected looms, evoking the Showa era. Renowned as a representative of Japan's heritage, it showcases the art of pre-dyed weaving. Its hallmark is the soft texture reminiscent of hand weaving, achieved through meticulous manual processes involving over 30 stages, spanning 2 to 4 months for completion. This fabric is an ideal choice for those seeking to create unique, traditionally-inspired pieces.
[Weaving Characteristics]
The distinctive "tate kasuri" technique is employed, where patterns are exclusively woven using warp threads (tate ito), also known as "ita kasuri" or "board kasuri." This technique was historically used to create "yukin-ko kasuri," a type of vertical and horizontal kasuri fabric dyed with indigo through hand weaving.
[Arare Pattern]
Small, evenly spaced patterns are referred to as "arare." Unlike prints, patterns created through binding techniques offer a fascinating arrangement with each motif subtly varying in size due to the nature of the dyeing process. This results in an overall cohesive and captivating design. The versatility of the arare pattern makes it suitable for both clothing and various goods.
[Shijira Weaving]
Characterized by the "shibo" effect, the uneven texture created by the tension difference between warp and weft threads, shijira weaving is a distinctive technique. Typically providing a comfortable touch, lightness, and the ability to prevent sweat from clinging to the skin, this technique is highly valued as a summer material. Kurume Shijira by Shimogawa Orimono offers a variation with slightly reduced texture, making it suitable for year-round use.
