[About Kurume Kasuri]
Kurume Kasuri is a retro belt-driven power loom from the Showa era, comprising 20 interconnected looms operated by a single motor. It was founded in 1948 and is a representative traditional pre-dyed fabric of Japan. The fabric is known for its soft texture, resembling handwoven materials. With many manual processes involved, it takes 2 to 4 months and over 30 steps to complete the weaving. The finished fabrics are all subjected to a 10% shrinkage through a process of hot water treatment and natural drying. This fabric is perfect for those who seek meticulously crafted traditional textiles from Japan.
[Characteristics of the Weaving]
The term "stripe" ("shima" in Japanese) originally referred to cotton fabric with vertical stripes imported from foreign countries through Nanban trade. It was called "shima-mono" (island fabric) because it was brought from distant lands ("shima") and later came to be known as "stripe" during the Edo period.
[About Shijira Ori]
Shijira Ori is a type of fabric characterized by the unevenness called "shibo," which is created by the difference in tension between the warp and weft threads. It is known for its comfortable feel and lightweight, making it suitable for summer wear as it doesn't cling to the skin. Kurume Shijira by Shimogawa Orimono has been adjusted to have a slightly less prominent shibo, making it suitable for year-round use.
