[About Kurume Kasuri]
Kurume Kasuri is a traditional pre-dyed woven fabric from Japan, produced using a retro, belt-driven power loom system consisting of 20 machines connected to a single motor. It originated from the Kurume Kasuri weaving mill, established in 1948 during the Showa era. This fabric is known for its soft texture, resembling handwoven textiles. The production process involves extensive manual work, taking 2 to 4 months to complete over 30 intricate steps.

The woven fabric features a unique characteristic called "bokashi-shima," which is a striped pattern created by combining shades of the same color. In the bokashi-shima pattern, colors gradually change along the stripes, creating a beautiful and harmonious effect. The term "stripe" ("shima" in Japanese) originally referred to cotton fabric with vertical stripes imported from foreign countries through Nanban trade. It was called "shima-mono" (island fabric) because it was brought from distant lands ("shima") and later came to be known as "stripe" during the Edo period.
