Kurume Kasuri is a traditional pre-dyed woven fabric from Japan, produced using a retro, belt-driven power loom system consisting of 20 machines connected to a single motor. It originated from the Kurume Kasuri weaving mill, established in 1948 during the Showa era. This fabric is known for its soft texture, resembling handwoven textiles. The production process involves extensive manual work, taking 2 to 4 months to complete over 30 intricate steps.
The woven fabric, once finished, undergoes a natural drying process after being carefully steamed, resulting in approximately 10% shrinkage. Kurume Kasuri is a masterpiece of Japanese traditional weaving, making it an ideal choice for those seeking to create unique and exquisite pieces.
[Characteristics of Weaving]
Kurume Kasuri features a blurred stripe pattern, achieved through the clever combination of varying shades of the same color. The term "bokashi-shima" refers to the gradual color change along the stripes, creating a beautiful and harmonious effect. The term "stripe" ("shima" in Japanese) originally referred to cotton fabric with vertical stripes imported from foreign countries through Nanban trade. It was called "shima-mono" (island fabric) because it was brought from distant lands ("shima") and later came to be known as "stripe" during the Edo period.
