[About Kurume Kasuri]
Kurume Kasuri is a traditional pre-dyed Japanese textile produced by the Kurume Kasuri weaving company, which was established in 1948. It is a representative traditional dyed fabric of Japan, known for its soft and handwoven-like texture, similar to hand-weaving. The production process involves extensive manual work, taking 2 to 4 months with over 30 steps to complete. Once the fabric is woven, it undergoes a hot water treatment and natural drying process, resulting in approximately 10% shrinkage. This fabric is perfect for those who wish to create a carefully crafted traditional Japanese textile.
[Weaving Features]
The fabric is characterized by a bokashi-stripe pattern, which is a gradual variation in shades of the same color. The term "stripe" originally referred to cotton fabric with vertical stripes imported from foreign countries through Nanban trade. It was called "shima-mono" (island fabric) because it was brought from distant lands ("shima") and later came to be known as "stripe" during the Edo period.
[About "13 Tachi"]
The Kurume Kasuri artisans refer to the stripe pattern where 13 stripes are aligned within the fabric width as "13 Tachi."
