Made in Japan
Kurume Kasuri is a traditional pre-dyed woven fabric produced using retro belt-driven power looms, where 20 looms are connected and operated by a single motor. It originated from the Kurume Kasuri weaving factory established in 1948 during the Showa era. This fabric is a representative traditional textile of Japan, known for its soft and hand-woven-like texture.
The weaving process involves the use of old-style looms known as "4-tsuori" that weave checkered patterns. Despite being powered looms, they are operated at low speeds to allow for a slow and gentle weaving process. Starting from the warp preparation stage, the craftsmen work with loose tension to avoid stressing the threads, resulting in a soft texture. For the weft threads, they use "mura-ito" or unevenly thick threads, which create subtle surface irregularities and slight variations in color, giving the fabric a soft expression even with contrasting color combinations.
