Made in Japan
A collection of 20 retro belt-driven power looms, linked by a single motor, harks back to the Showa era. Established in the 23rd year of the Showa era (1948), Kurume Kasuri is a traditional pre-dyed woven fabric that epitomizes Japan's heritage. Its soft texture reminiscent of hand-weaving sets it apart. With a labor-intensive process spanning over 30 steps, it takes 2 to 4 months to weave. A perfect choice for those who seek to craft meticulously curated pieces within the realm of Japan's traditional textiles.
[Weaving Characteristics]
Utilizing the "Yoko Kasuri" technique, patterns are woven into the weft threads (yokoito) using a tying (kukuri) method and a dedicated shuttle. Ranging from floral designs to polka dots, this approach offers a high degree of design flexibility, often referred to as "Egasuri." By aligning the weft threads with the pattern around a wooden pipe called "Tong," and weaving on a specialized power loom with intricate adjustments, Kurume Kasuri stands as the unparalleled bastion of Kasuri weaving techniques in the contemporary world.
[Kuchiba Color]
The leaves that fall from trees in autumn and scatter on the ground come in various colors. The color that these leaves take on as they decay in the soil is referred to as "Kuchiba." Particularly, leaves that have turned red before decaying are called "Akakuchiba" or "Red Hojicha Leaves." Inspired by the color combination of Akakuchiba in traditional Japanese layering (kasane no irome), which consists of a red top layer, a reddish-yellow middle layer, and a yellow inner layer, a maple leaf pattern is woven with light yellow for the warp threads and red for the weft threads.
