Kurume Kasuri is a traditional pre-dyed woven fabric produced by Kurume Kasuri Orimoto, established in 1948. Operated by a network of 20 interconnected retro Showa-era belt-driven power looms, this artisanal workshop exemplifies Japan's esteemed heritage of pre-dyed weaving. Notable for its soft, handwoven-like texture, the fabric is marked by an extensive manual crafting process spanning over 30 intricate steps, culminating in completion within 2 to 4 months. [Weaving Features]
A distinctive hallmark of Kurume Kasuri lies in its "Tatekasuri" technique, where intricate patterns are woven using only the warp threads (tateito). By utilizing 30/2 threads for the kasuri motifs and 40/2 threads for the base fabric, the fabric exhibits a subtle yet tactile texture that accentuates the pronounced kasuri patterns.
