[About Kurume Kasuri]
Kurume Kasuri is a traditional Japanese hand-dyed woven fabric, created using a retro belt-driven power loom where twenty looms are connected to a single motor. The weaving company was established in 1948, making it an iconic representative of Japan's traditional pre-dyed textiles. The fabric is known for its soft and handwoven-like texture, which is achieved through a labor-intensive process taking 2 to 4 months and involving more than 30 intricate steps. After weaving, all fabrics undergo a natural drying process, causing approximately 10% shrinkage, resulting in the final finish.
The fabric is a perfect choice for individuals seeking to create unique and meticulously crafted pieces, especially those who appreciate traditional Japanese textiles.
[Weaving Characteristics]
Kurume Kasuri is made using the most basic weaving structure known as "plain weave." The main feature of Kurume Kasuri lies in its technique called "kukuri," which allows for the expression of various patterns. To fully utilize this characteristic, the weaving structure is kept simple. However, when creating solid-colored fabrics with a focus on texture, a different approach is taken to explore new possibilities.
Within the framework of "plain weave," adjustments are made to the balance between warp and weft thread densities to optimize the colors of the warp and weft threads. Normally, the color of the warp threads has a stronger influence, but in this fabric, efforts are made to highlight the weft thread's color while still using the warp as an accent to create complex color intersections.
[About Kiri Wide]
Kiri Wide introduces changes in the weaving structure of the warp threads. For the weft, 20/1 yarn and slub yarn are used, resulting in a mix of colors optimized by the crossing of four different types of yarn. The fabric has approximately double the thickness of regular textiles and features a soft, textured surface.
The colorway for this particular fabric is 8A Olive Green, Melange 30/2 BSlue White, and 20/1 Kincha (Golden Brown) 1322.
