Kurume Kasuri is a traditional pre-dyed woven fabric, produced using a retro belt-driven power loom system that connects 20 looms to a single motor. Founded in 1948, it is a representative craft of Japan. Its unique characteristic is the soft texture reminiscent of hand-weaving. The intricate production process involves numerous manual steps, taking 2 to 4 months to complete more than 30 stages. The finished fabric is all shrink-treated through natural drying after hot water processing. It is a perfect choice for those who seek meticulously crafted traditional Japanese textiles.
[Weaving Features]
"Kataha" refers to a single thread, and Kurume Kasuri named the fine pin-striped pattern created against the base color "Kataha Shima." It delicately adds a touch of reddish-brown to the navy stripes. The term "stripe" ("shima" in Japanese) originally referred to cotton fabric with vertical stripes imported from foreign countries through Nanban trade. It was called "shima-mono" (island fabric) because it was brought from distant lands ("shima") and later came to be known as "stripe" during the Edo period.
