[About Kurume Kasuri]
Kurume Kasuri is a traditional pre-dyed fabric woven on a retro belt-driven power loom system, where 20 looms are connected to a single motor. Founded in 1948, it originates from Kurume and is known as a representative Japanese traditional woven fabric. Its distinct feature is a soft texture similar to handwoven fabrics. The production involves many manual processes, taking 2 to 4 months and over 30 steps to complete. After weaving, the fabrics are all shrunk by about 10% through a process of natural drying with hot water.

[Weaving Characteristics]
Kurume Kasuri features bold stripes composed of 6 different colors. The color combinations are inspired by Japan's four seasons, seasonal events, and other traditional occasions. The term "stripe" ("shima" in Japanese) originally referred to cotton fabric with vertical stripes imported from foreign countries through Nanban trade. It was called "shima-mono" (island fabric) because it was brought from distant lands ("shima") and later came to be known as "stripe" during the Edo period.
