A retro Showa-era belt-driven power loom, connected to 20 looms from a single motor, is at work. Established in 1948, Kurume Kasuri is a representative of traditional pre-dyed woven textiles in Japan. It offers a soft texture reminiscent of hand weaving and involves numerous manual processes, taking 2 to 4 months for over 30 stages of completion. An ideal fabric for those who wish to create a meticulously crafted traditional Japanese piece.
[Weaving Characteristics]
Craftsmen hand-dye the fabric using authentic fermented indigo, achieving a finish that emanates from indigo jars. The warp threads involve alternating sections of subtly dyed indigo and chemically dyed navy blue, creating a basic yet soft texture.
[Indigo Dyeing]
Kurume Kasuri's indigo dyeing preserves the labor-intensive tradition of "fermentation dyeing." It possesses the allure of transitioning between delicate shades, conveying both strength and elegance. During the Kamakura period, samurai adopted the practice of wearing a form of indigo-dyed fabric called "kachiiro" beneath their armor. The associations between indigo and anti-inflammatory, detoxifying, and hemostatic properties, along with the notion of "victory," contribute to its auspicious reputation. Its insect-repellent properties made it invaluable in mountain and agricultural settings. Furthermore, its use extended to wedding attire and bedding due to its resistance to pests. The fabric's excellent heat retention and gentle impact on the skin render it optimal for baby clothing.
