Made in Japan
Kurume Kasuri is woven on retro belt-driven power looms from the Showa era, with twenty looms operating from a single motor. Founded in 1948, the mill continues to produce one of Japan's most representative yarn-dyed textiles. The fabric is known for its soft, handwoven-like texture. Because many of the processes are done manually, production involves more than thirty steps and takes two to four months to complete. The finished fabric is hot-water washed and naturally dried, allowing it to shrink by about 10%. This mill also supports new entrepreneurs. Kurume Kasuri is an ideal textile for those who wish to create distinctive pieces rooted in traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
Although this fabric uses the same plain weave structure common to many Kurume Kasuri textiles, the warp yarn arrangement has been uniquely engineered to create a soft and supple texture. In addition, moderately thick weft yarn is used to eliminate sheerness. Because this soft finish results in a structure more prone to fraying compared to other weaves, reinforced sewing - such as overlap stitching or using fusible interlining - is recommended. The arrow-feather-like kasuri pattern is a distinctive characteristic unique to mesh-style weaving.
