Murakumo is a type of variegated lacquer ware in which soot from a Japanese candle is applied to the surface where the top coat has been applied and has begun to dry, creating a black cloud-like pattern.
The shimmering appearance of candle flame is expressed by Murakumo Nuri. The expression of the lacquer is different one by one, and no two pieces have the same pattern. It can be used not only for drinks, but also for dessert cups, soba-inokuchi (buckwheat noodle cup), etc. Yamanaka is a production center of wooden ware. Yamanaka lacquerware is also characterized by its high level of lacquering techniques. Each piece is carefully finished one by one, and the good thing about brush lacquering is that it is extremely pleasant to the palate.
There are about 10 craftsmen in Yamanaka Lacquerware production area who can do hand lacquering, and only one of them can do Murakumo-nuri in Yamanaka Lacquerware.
