Kurume Kasuri is a traditional pre-dyed woven fabric produced by a retro belt-driven power loom consisting of 20 units connected to a single motor. Established in 1948, it originates from Kurume and is representative of Japan's traditional pre-dyed textiles. Known for its soft and hand-woven-like texture, it involves a labor-intensive process of over 30 steps, taking 2 to 4 months to complete the weaving.
[Chijimi Ori (Crinkled Weave)]
Chijimi Ori is a plain weave created by dividing the warp yarns into two groups and weaving them at different tensions to achieve subtle surface irregularities on the fabric. This feature allows air to circulate between the fabric and the skin, preventing the fabric from sticking to the body, making it a popular material for summer garments.
[Aoni (Blue Green) Color]
In this context, "Aoni" refers to a shade of green. "Ni" means soil, indicating a color resembling greenish soil. Aoni specifically represents the pigment "Iwarokusho," an old name for copperas green, which was historically produced in Nara and is famous for its use in ancient Japanese poems. The term "Aoni yoshi" is a poetic expression associated with Nara.
