    Kurume Kasuri is woven on retro belt-driven power looms from the Showa era, with twenty looms powered by a single motor. Founded in 1948, the mill continues to produce one of Japan's most iconic yarn-dyed textiles. The fabric is known for its soft, handwoven-like texture. Because many processes are performed manually, production involves more than thirty steps and takes two to four months to complete. This textile is ideal for those who wish to create pieces rooted in traditional Japanese craftsmanship.


    This textile is woven using *yokogasuri*, a technique in which the pattern is created by tying and dyeing the weft yarns before weaving. Because the weft allows for great design freedom, yokogasuri is also known as *e-gasuri* ("picture ikat"). The weft is wound onto a flat wooden bobbin called a"tong," aligned carefully to match the pattern. This precise weaving method - supported by advanced tying machinery and the skill of artisans - makes Kurume Kasuri one of the highest forms of ikat weaving in the world, and the only region where such techniques are still practiced today.


    Roses have long symbolized love and beauty. Every element - color, bud, and even thorns - carries its own meaning, making roses the flower with the richest symbolic vocabulary. Traditionally used to express heartfelt emotions to a loved one, most of their meanings relate to romance.


    In traditional Kurume Kasuri, flower petals are usually expressed in white through the tying method. For this design, however, the drafting method has been reworked to use a"reverse tying technique," allowing the petals to appear in black instead. The blooming roses - overflowing like a garden in full spring - symbolize vitality and the breath of new life.
