[About Kurume Kasuri]
A collection of 20 retro belt-driven power looms, interconnected by a single motor, transports us to the Showa era. Established in 1948, Kurume Kasuri Weaving Workshop is a representative of traditional pre-dyed woven textiles in Japan. It features a soft texture reminiscent of hand weaving. With numerous manual processes, it takes 2 to 4 months to complete over 30 steps. This fabric is an ideal choice for those who wish to create meticulously crafted pieces within the realm of Japan's traditional textiles.
[Weaving Characteristics]
The technique of "tatekasuri," using only warp threads to create patterns, is also known as "itagasuri."
[Ichimatsu Pattern]
A type of checkerboard pattern where squares or rectangles of different colors are alternately arranged. This pattern, symbolizing good fortune, has been used in decorations, crafts, and architecture. Its interconnected nature symbolizes prosperity and lineage continuation. Originally used for stone pavements, it gained the name "ichimatsu" when kabuki actor Sano Ikumatsu popularized it by wearing it on his kimono during the Edo period. The pattern's interpretation as a "pattern of success" at Shimogawa Orimono reflects its evolution through changing eras.
