[About Kurume Kasuri]
Kurume Kasuri is a traditional pre-dyed woven fabric that originates from Kurume, founded in 1948. It features a retro-style belt-driven power loom system with 20 interconnected looms operated by a single motor, reminiscent of the Showa era. This fabric is renowned as a representative of Japan's traditional textiles. It showcases a soft, handwoven-like texture and requires extensive manual processes, taking 2 to 4 months to complete over 30 intricate steps. Kurume Kasuri is the perfect choice for those seeking to create meticulously crafted traditional Japanese textiles.
[Weaving Characteristics]
Kurume Kasuri employs the "Tateyoko Kasuri" technique, where patterns are formed by the overlapping of warp (tateito) and weft (yokoito) threads. Kurume is the last remaining producer using the power loom to weave Tateyoko Kasuri. Alongside the presence of tying machines and skilled artisans, Kurume Kasuri stands as the sole producer globally that inherits the pinnacle of Tateyoko Kasuri craftsmanship.
[Silkette Processed Yarn]
Silkette processed yarn is a technique used to impart silk-like luster to cotton threads. It is predominantly applied to cotton yarn and is referred to as "Mercerised cotton" overseas. Specifically, the process involves immersing yarn in a solution of caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) and stretching it to refine the yarn's cross-section. This process enhances coloration, resulting in a silk-like shine and reducing fuzziness in the yarn. The fabric produced using this yarn exhibits improved durability and light resistance.
