Kurume Kasuri is a traditional Japanese pre-dyed textile produced by Kurume Kasuri Orimoto, founded in 1948. It utilizes 20 retro-style belt-driven power looms connected to a single motor. This fabric is renowned as one of Japan's representative traditional pre-dyed textiles. It is characterized by a soft, hand-woven-like texture, which imparts a vintage feel to the fabric.
The manufacturing process involves a significant amount of manual work, taking 2 to 4 months to complete more than 30 steps of production. Once the fabric is woven, it undergoes a process of hot water treatment and natural drying, resulting in approximately 10% shrinkage, which contributes to its unique finishing.
The fabric is particularly suitable for individuals who wish to create exceptional items using traditional Japanese textiles and is backed by initiatives to support entrepreneurs.
[Characteristics of the Weave]
Kurume Kasuri employs fine 60/2 count weft yarn, which gives the fabric a glossy finish. By combining 5 to 7 colors both vertically and horizontally, the fabric achieves a lightweight yet deep coloration. The weave is designed to be smooth and even, emphasizing the shine of the fabric. This type of weaving is known as "kiri" at Shimogawa Orimono, representing a formal style of fabric.
