Powered by a single motor that connects 20 looms, our vintage belt-driven power looms evoke the nostalgic ambiance of the Showa era. Established in 1948 during the same era, we are Kurume Kasuri weaving artisans. Our textiles epitomize the esteemed tradition of pre-dyed weaving in Japan, characterized by a soft texture reminiscent of hand weaving. With a meticulous manual process spanning over 30 steps, it takes 2 to 4 months to create each masterpiece.
[Weaving Features]
Kurume Kasuri's distinctive allure lies not only in its intricate patterns achieved through the "kukuri" technique but also in its soft, almost hand-woven texture even when woven on mechanized looms. By minimizing tension on the threads during processes such as warp preparation, weaving, and finishing, and incorporating numerous manual steps, the resulting texture bears witness to the craftsmanship passed down through generations. While omitting the "kukuri" process, we meticulously weave solid colors and stripes in the same manner, preserving the fabric's inherent softness. This softness is widely recognized and appreciated by enthusiasts when first experiencing plain fabric.
[4-Ply Yarn Weaving]
Pre-dyed weft threads (horizontal threads) are wound around wooden pipes in sets of four, allowing for overlapping of four different colors, creating depth and richness in hues. Additionally, the fabric's thickness lends a unique knitted texture. Due to its looser weave compared to regular kasuri fabrics, special considerations like using interfacing during sewing are necessary.
[Herringbone Pattern]
The term "herringbone" comes from its resemblance to the bones of a herring fish. This pattern is created by alternating right and left twill weaves, forming V-shaped motifs. Amid Kurume Kasuri's hallmark plain weaves, the utilization of a "dobby loom" for herringbone weaving showcases the innovative spirit of Shimogawa Orimono. However, due to challenges in sourcing loom parts, production of Kurume Kasuri with herringbone and twill patterns has been discontinued, with limited quantities available.
[Warp Gradation]
The warp threads, submerged within the 4-ply weft threads, Notes a gradient from blue to navy, contributing a subtle gradation effect to the fabric's surface, enhancing its soft appearance.
