A collection of 20 interconnected power looms, driven by a single motor, creates a nostalgic and retro atmosphere reminiscent of the Showa era. Founded in the 23rd year of the Showa era (1948), Kurume Kasuri Weaving is a representative example of traditional Japanese pre-dyed textiles. Known for its soft and almost handwoven-like texture, it embodies the meticulous craftsmanship of its labor-intensive process, taking 2 to 4 months to complete. With its focus on supporting entrepreneurs, this fabric is a perfect choice for those who seek to create unique pieces rooted in Japan's traditional textile heritage.
[Weaving Characteristics]
Kurume Kasuri is primarily woven using a basic weave called "Hiraori" (plain weave). Its defining feature lies in the expression of patterns through the "knotting" technique. To accentuate this technique, the weaving structure is kept simple. By introducing variations in the density of warp and weft threads within the framework of plain weave, the optimization of color between warp and weft threads is achieved. While typically warp threads reflect color more prominently, in this fabric, weft threads are designed to reflect color more vividly while the warp threads serve as accents, creating intricate color intersections. The warp threads incorporate "Kasuri" patterns created through knotting techniques, which led to a departure from the plain "Mix Slub" pattern, enabling greater freedom in pattern expression.
[Mix Slub]
In contrast to plain Mix Slub, this version utilizes different thread counts:
Warp Threads (Tateito): 40/2 and 30/2 (in some patterns, 40/2 only)
Weft Threads (Yokoito): 40/2 and 16/1 Slub (or 20/1 and 16/1 Slub for specific patterns)
Through the interplay of these four threads, an optimized mix of colors is achieved, showcasing a distinct texture that combines thickness with softness.
