Kurume Kasuri is a traditional pre-dyed woven fabric originating from Kurume, established in 1948. With a retro aesthetic reminiscent of the Showa era, it utilizes a unique setup of 20 looms connected to a single motor, producing a nostalgic belt-driven power loom. Renowned as an emblem of Japan's heritage, this fabric is renowned for its soft and pliable texture akin to hand weaving. It involves a labor-intensive process, taking 2 to 4 months to complete over 30 intricate steps. Ideal for individuals seeking to craft a bespoke piece imbued with the essence of Japanese tradition.
[Weaving Characteristics]
Kurume Kasuri employs the "Tateyoko" technique, where patterns are formed by tying the warp threads (tateito). Using dedicated shuttles, it weaves patterns like floral motifs and polka dots, offering a high degree of expressive freedom. The artistry lies in the process of wrapping the weft threads (yokoito) on wooden pipes known as "Tong," meticulously aligning them with the intended pattern. This technique, combined with the craftsmanship of the artisans and specialized power looms, cements Kurume Kasuri as the epitome of Kasuri weaving skills in the modern era.
[Seasonal Blossoms]
Incorporating seasonal blossoms such as plum, chrysanthemum, camellia, and hydrangea, Kurume Kasuri infuses life's beginnings and celebrations with floral symbolism. Each flower carries a unique "language of flowers," enriching life through practices like "presenting flowers" or "offering flowers," enhancing emotional well-being.
[Plum Motif]
Symbolizing "blooming through adversity," the plum motif is associated with auspiciousness and safe childbirth due to its phonetic resemblance to the term "to give birth." Plum blossoms convey traits of "elegance," "nobility," "endurance," and "loyalty." Inspired by the plum's prime blooming in the chilly winds of February, the symbolism reflects endurance and nobility. Additionally, the "loyalty" symbolism traces its origins to Sugawara no Michizane, a noble during the Heian period. The legend of Michizane's cherished plum tree flying to him in exile embodies the concept of loyalty.
