[About Kurume Kasuri]
Kurume Kasuri is a traditional pre-dyed woven fabric, produced using a retro belt-driven power loom system comprising twenty connected looms operated by a single motor. Established in 1948, Kurume Kasuri originated in Kurume and is renowned as one of Japan's representative traditional dyed fabrics. It is known for its soft and delicate texture, akin to hand-woven textiles. The production process involves numerous manual steps, taking 2 to 4 months and over 30 procedures to complete. The finished fabric undergoes a natural drying process, where it is gently steamed and dried to achieve approximately 10% shrinkage. Kurume Kasuri is perfect for those seeking to create exquisite and intricate traditional Japanese textiles.

[Characteristics of Kurume Kasuri]
The distinct feature of Kurume Kasuri lies in the use of a technique called "kukuri" (tie-dye), which enables a diverse array of patterns. Despite being woven on power looms, the fabric retains a unique softness reminiscent of hand-woven textiles. Each step of the production process, from warping to weaving and finishing, is meticulously carried out by skilled artisans with minimal stress on the threads, preserving the characteristic texture that has been passed down through generations. While the "kukuri" process may be omitted in plain or striped fabrics, the same artisans meticulously weave and finish these fabrics, leading to their exceptional softness, acknowledged and admired by numerous enthusiasts.

[About Slub Yarn]
Slub yarn refers to a type of yarn intentionally created with varying thicknesses, alternating between thicker and thinner sections in a random manner. Before advancements in spinning technology, slub yarn occurred naturally, resulting in the distinctive vertical fading seen in vintage jeans. In recent times, there has been a resurgence of interest in the artisanal "slub yarn" due to the trend towards a return to nature. At Shimogawa Orimono, we have recognized this trend and proactively employed "slub yarn," which had been rarely used in Kurume Kasuri until now, as a prominent feature in fabrics such as "tate-kasuri" (vertical tie-dye), plain, and stripes. Additionally, we pay attention to the distinct characteristics of slub yarn created by different spinning companies.
