We proudly present our legacy of Kurume Kasuri, a timeless fabric crafted with care. Our workshop operates a captivating ensemble of twenty retro belt-driven power looms, all interlinked by a single motor. Founded in 1948 during the Showa period, our weaving tradition has been nurtured in Kurume, a city renowned for its connection to authentic Japanese culture. We specialize in the art of pre-dyed textiles, and our fabrics exude a gentle, handwoven-like texture that echoes the spirit of bygone times. Each piece is a testament to our dedication, involving over thirty meticulous steps spanning two to four months. As a symbol of Japanese heritage, our Kurume Kasuri is an ideal choice for those with a penchant for crafting unique, traditional pieces.
[Weaving Characteristics]
Our weaving technique incorporates the "tong," wooden tubes used to wind weft threads in alignment, which are then woven to create the distinctive horizontal kasuri pattern. We intentionally opt for a random weave pattern for the kasuri weft threads, avoiding precise pattern alignment. Furthermore, by weaving two threads in alignment, the intricate interplay of two kasuri threads-one dyed black and the other white-creates captivating variations in color depth and intensity. The warp threads also play a role, presenting a harmonious two-color pinstripe pattern as they intersect with the kasuri design.
Please note that the kasuri pattern on the weft exhibits an irregular variation.
