Kurume Kasuri is a traditional pre-dyed textile that originated in 1948 and is woven using a retro belt-driven power loom with twenty units connected to a single motor, reflecting the nostalgic Showa era. It is renowned as one of Japan's representative traditional pre-dyed fabrics. The fabric is known for its soft and handwoven-like texture, resembling handcrafted work. The production process involves numerous manual steps, taking 2 to 4 months to complete over 30 processes. Once woven, the fabric is treated with hot water and naturally dried, resulting in approximately 10% shrinkage. There are also initiatives to support entrepreneurs. This fabric is perfect for those who wish to create a carefully crafted traditional Japanese piece.
[Characteristics of the Weaving]
It employs fine 60/2 count yarns for the weft, providing a glossy finish. The combination of 5 to 7 colors in both warp and weft creates a thin fabric with rich and deep color tones. The weaving is done without any unevenness or bumps, emphasizing the shiny appearance. This is a formal type of weaving known as "kiri" in Shimogawa Orimono, referring to the combined yarn weaving.
