A retro belt-driven power loom from the Showa era, consisting of twenty interconnected looms powered by a single motor. Founded in 1948, Kurume Kasuri is a distinguished traditional pre-dyed woven fabric manufacturer. It stands as a representative of Japan's heritage, known for its soft texture reminiscent of hand weaving. With numerous manual steps, it takes 2 to 4 months to complete over 30 intricate processes. This fabric is perfect for individuals seeking to create unique pieces with a touch of Japan's traditional textiles.
[Weaving Characteristics]
Creating patterns using the "Yoko Kasuri" technique by binding the weft threads (Yokoito) to form designs and weaving with a dedicated shuttle. This method, also known as "Egasuri," offers a high degree of design flexibility, including floral patterns and polka dots. The technique of aligning weft threads with a wooden tube known as a "tong" and weaving on a specialized power loom while fine-tuning the patterns represents a culmination of the binding machinery and skilled artisans. Globally, it's no exaggeration to say that Kurume Kasuri preserves the pinnacle of Kasuri weaving technology into the modern era.
[Shippou Pattern]
The Shippou pattern is created by overlaying four quarter-sized circles, known as "Shippou Mon." When these patterns are arranged symmetrically in all four directions, it's referred to as "Shippou Tsunagi." The circle symbolizes harmony, connecting people in a circle of importance. Moreover, due to the infinite extension of this pattern, it symbolizes good fortune and prosperity, including the growth of descendants and business. In Buddhism, "Shippou" refers to seven treasures mentioned in the "Sutra of Immeasurable Life," indicating that human connections and bonds are equally valuable treasures. Shippou is adopted as a logo mark by Shimogawa Orimono.
