Kurume Kasuri is a traditional Japanese fabric produced by Kurume Kasuri Orimoto, which was founded in 1948 and operates 20 retro-style belt-driven power looms connected to a single motor. It is renowned as one of Japan's representative traditional pre-dyed textiles. The fabric's distinctive feature is its soft, hand-woven-like texture, which is achieved through extensive manual work involving over 30 processes taking 2 to 4 months to complete. After weaving, the fabric undergoes a process of hot water treatment and natural drying, causing it to shrink by approximately 10%.
The fabric is ideal for individuals who desire to create finely crafted products with traditional Japanese textiles and is actively supported through initiatives for entrepreneurs.
[Characteristics of the Weave]
Kurume Kasuri utilizes fine 60/2 count yarn for the weft, resulting in a glossy finish. By combining 5 to 7 colors vertically and horizontally, the fabric achieves a delicate depth of colors despite its lightweight nature. The weaving process is smooth and even, enhancing the shine of the fabric. This particular weave is referred to as "kiri" at Shimogawa Orimono, and it falls under the formal type of fabric.
