[About Kurume Kasuri]
Kurume Kasuri is a traditional pre-dyed fabric from Japan, woven on a retro belt-type power loom consisting of 20 interconnected looms driven by a single motor. The Kurume Kasuri weaving company was established in 1948 during the Showa era.

This fabric is known for its soft texture, reminiscent of handwoven materials, and is a representative of traditional pre-dyed weaving in Japan. It involves a labor-intensive process with over 30 steps taking 2 to 4 months to complete. The resulting fabric, after being woven, is subjected to hot-water washing and natural drying, leading to approximately 10% shrinkage. It is the perfect choice for those who wish to create meticulously crafted traditional pieces.

[Characteristics of the Weaving]
The warp threads are made from slightly thicker cotton yarn called 30/2, resulting in a fabric with a slightly substantial feel. The weft threads are made from 12/1 nep yarn, which has a hand-spun texture and distinctive nubs. Initially, the fabric has a somewhat rigid impression due to indigo dyeing and the starch used during weaving. However, it softens with washing over time. The unique texture that evolves with age is achieved through the careful warping and weaving techniques of Kurume Kasuri, which minimize tension. The "Indigo-dyed Plain" series, using nep yarn, has been a long-standing bestseller, made by Kurume Kasuri for generations.

[Indigo Dyeing]
The indigo dyeing of Kurume Kasuri continues to follow the labor-intensive traditional technique known as "fermentation dyeing." This process produces a range of subtle shades that can appear robust or elegant. During the Kamakura period, it became a custom for warriors to wear a type of indigo called "kachiiro" under their armor. Indigo was associated with good luck due to its flame-resistant, detoxifying, and blood-stopping properties, and the word "kachi" sounded similar to "victory." Indigo's resistance to pests made it valuable for mountain and agricultural work, and it was also treasured for bridal kimonos and bedding due to its pest-repelling properties. With excellent insulation and skin-friendly qualities, it's also ideal for baby clothing.
