Powered by a single motor, a network of 20 looms operates, embodying the retro charm of Showa-era belt-driven power looms. Established in the 23rd year of the Showa era (1948), Kurume Kasuri Weaving is a cornerstone of traditional Japanese pre-dyed textiles. Notable for its soft texture reminiscent of handwoven fabrics, it involves a labor-intensive process of over 30 steps, requiring 2 to 4 months to complete. All finished fabrics are meticulously treated through a process of natural drying and shrinking. With a dedication to supporting entrepreneurs, this fabric is a perfect fit for those aiming to create distinctive pieces rooted in Japan's textile heritage.
[Weaving Characteristics]
Kurume Kasuri is woven using the simplest weaving structure called "Hiraori" (plain weave). Its hallmark lies in pattern expression through the "knotting" technique. To enhance this feature, the weaving structure is intentionally kept simple. By introducing variations in warp and weft thread densities within the framework of plain weave, the optimization of color balance between warp and weft threads was achieved. While warp threads typically dictate color prominence, in this fabric, weft threads are given precedence, resulting in intricate color intersections, complemented by accentuating warp threads. The warp threads incorporate "Kasuri" patterns created through knotting techniques, leading to a divergence from the basic "Mix Slub" pattern to enable greater freedom in pattern expression.
[Mix Slub]
In contrast to plain Mix Slub, this version employs different thread counts:
Warp Threads (Tateito): 40/2 and 30/2 (or 40/2 only in some patterns)
Weft Threads (Yokoito): 16/1 Slub (or 20/1 and 16/1 Slub for specific patterns)
Through the interplay of these four threads, an optimized mix of colors is achieved, resulting in a distinctive texture that combines thickness with softness.
