Kurume Kasuri is a traditional pre-dyed woven fabric produced using a retro belt-driven power loom system where twenty looms are connected to a single motor. It was established in 1948 and is a representative of Japan's renowned traditional pre-dyed woven textiles. The fabric is known for its soft texture that closely resembles handwoven pieces. The production process involves numerous manual steps, taking 2 to 4 months and over 30 stages to complete. After weaving, the fabric undergoes a natural shrinkage of about 10% through a hot water treatment and natural drying process. The company also supports entrepreneurs, making this fabric a perfect choice for those who seek to create meticulously crafted products with a touch of Japanese tradition.
[Characteristics of Weaving]
Kurume Kasuri is woven using the most basic weaving structure known as "Hiraori" or plain weave. Its most prominent feature lies in the expression of patterns through the "kukuri" tying technique. To fully utilize this characteristic, the weaving structure is kept simple. However, when creating plain fabrics with an emphasis on texture, they embrace a different approach to explore new possibilities. Within the framework of plain weave, they introduce changes in the density balance between the warp and weft threads to optimize the representation of colors in both warp and weft threads. While normally the warp thread's color is more dominant, in the case of this fabric, they ingeniously emphasize the color of the weft threads while still using the warp threads as accents, resulting in an intricate interplay of colors.
[About "Mix Slub"]
For the warp threads (tate-ito), they use 60/2 and 30/2 yarns, while for the weft threads (yoko-ito), they employ 20/1 and 10/1 slub yarns. The fabric achieves an optimized mix of colors through the intersection of these four different yarn types. Despite its thickness, the fabric retains a unique softness in its texture.
