Kurume Kasuri is a traditional pre-dyed woven fabric, crafted using a retro Showa-era belt-driven power loom setup with 20 interconnected looms driven by a single motor. Established in the 23rd year of the Showa era, it originates from Kurume and has become an emblematic example of Japan's time-honored pre-dyed woven textiles. Known for its soft and handwoven-like texture, it involves a meticulous manual process, spanning over 30 steps and taking 2 to 4 months for completion. The woven fabric undergoes a process of boiling and natural drying, resulting in approximately 10% shrinkage.
In addition to its rich history, Kurume Kasuri is dedicated to supporting entrepreneurs and is ideal for individuals seeking to create distinct pieces with a focus on Japan's traditional weaving heritage.
[Weaving Characteristics]
Kurume Kasuri is woven using the most fundamental weave structure known as "plain weave." Its hallmark lies in the expression of patterns through the "kukuri" (tying) technique. To fully embrace this characteristic, the weaving structure remains deliberately simplistic. By adjusting the balance of warp and weft thread densities within the framework of plain weave, an optimal color balance between warp and weft threads was achieved. While warp thread colors are typically more pronounced, the design of this fabric cleverly allows the weft thread colors to be prominent, creating a complex interplay of colors while accentuating the warp threads through intricate color crossings. This is achieved by incorporating tied patterns into the warp threads.
[About Mix Slub]
The mix slub variant differs in terms of thread count. It utilizes:
40/2 for warp threads
40/2 and 16/1 slub for weft threads
This combination of four types of threads results in optimized mixed colors while maintaining a distinctive texture characterized by thickness yet softness.
