Kurume Kasuri is a traditional Japanese hand-dyed woven fabric produced using a retro belt-driven power loom where twenty looms are connected to a single motor. It was founded in 1948 and is a representative of Japan's renowned pre-dyed textiles. The fabric is known for its soft and handwoven-like texture, which is a result of a labor-intensive process taking 2 to 4 months and involving more than 30 intricate steps. After weaving, all fabrics undergo a natural drying process, causing approximately 10% shrinkage, resulting in the final finish.
For those seeking to create unique and meticulously crafted pieces, especially individuals who appreciate traditional Japanese textiles, Kurume Kasuri is an ideal fabric choice.
[Weaving Characteristics]
Kurume Kasuri is made using the most basic weaving structure known as "plain weave." Its main characteristic is the technique called "kukuri," which allows for the expression of various patterns. To fully showcase this feature, the weaving structure is kept simple. However, when creating solid-colored fabrics with a focus on texture, a different approach is taken to explore new possibilities.
Within the framework of "plain weave," adjustments are made to the balance between warp and weft thread densities to optimize the colors of the warp and weft threads. Normally, the color of the warp threads has a stronger influence, but in this fabric, efforts are made to emphasize the weft thread's color while still using the warp as an accent to create complex color intersections.
[About Mixed Slub]
The warp threads are made using 60/2 and 30/2 yarns, while the weft threads use 20/1 and 10/1 slub yarns. This combination of four different types of yarns results in a mix of colors that are optimized through their intersection. The fabric has thickness while maintaining a unique soft texture.
