[About Kurume Kasuri]
Kurume Kasuri is a traditional pre-dyed woven fabric produced by a retro belt-driven power loom system, with twenty looms connected to a single motor. It originated from the Kurume Kasuri weaving workshop established in 1948 during the Showa era. This fabric is renowned as a representative of Japan's traditional pre-dyed woven textiles. Its notable feature is the soft and delicate texture similar to handwoven fabrics.

The production process involves extensive manual work, requiring more than thirty steps and taking two to four months to complete the weaving of each piece. After weaving, all fabrics undergo a process of natural drying through hot water treatment, which causes them to shrink by approximately 10% as part of the finishing process.

[Characteristics of Weaving]
Kurume Kasuri stands out with bold stripes created using six different color combinations. The color schemes are inspired by the imagery of Japan's four seasons and seasonal events. The term "stripe" ("shima" in Japanese) originally referred to cotton fabric with vertical stripes imported from foreign countries through Nanban trade. It was called "shima-mono" (island fabric) because it was brought from distant lands ("shima") and later came to be known as "stripe" during the Edo period.
