This fabric is woven using a retro belt-driven power loom system, where 20 looms are connected to a single motor. Established in 1948, Kurume Kasuri Orimono is renowned for its traditional pre-dyed Japanese fabrics. It features a soft texture reminiscent of handwoven textiles and involves an intricate, labor-intensive process with over 30 steps, taking 2 to 4 months to complete. A perfect choice for those seeking to create a distinctive piece within Japan's traditional textile tradition.
[Weaving Characteristics]
The warp threads (tateito) utilize a fine-count cotton yarn known as 60/2. This allows for delicate, lustrous characteristics. Pursuing softness, the number of warp threads is intentionally reduced compared to standard weaving patterns. To enhance weaving strength, the weft threads (yokoito) use a thicker and textured yarn called 10/1 slub. This creates an unbalanced texture compared to the standard flat weave. The delicate depth of indigo dye and the soft, textured feel can be achieved through Kurume Kasuri's warp preparation technique, which minimizes tension during weaving.
[Indigo Dyeing]
Kurume Kasuri's indigo dyeing follows the labor-intensive "fermentation dyeing" method known as "hakko-date." This approach yields subtle color variations that evoke both strength and elegance. During the Kamakura period, warriors adopted the practice of wearing a type of indigo called "kachiiro" under their armor. Indigo's qualities of inflammation reduction, detoxification, and wound healing contributed to its association with good luck due to its connection to the word "kachi" (victory). Its resistance to insects and snakes made it invaluable for mountain and agricultural activities, and it was even used for wedding kimono and bedding due to its "insect-repellent" nature. Its excellent heat retention and skin-friendly properties also make it ideal for baby clothing.
