Kurume Kasuri is a traditional pre-dyed woven fabric that originates from the Kurume region, founded in 1948, utilizing a retro-style belt-driven power loom system with 20 machines linked to a single motor. It represents a classic piece of Japanese craftsmanship. This fabric is renowned for its soft texture, reminiscent of hand-weaving, and it holds a significant place in Japan's textile heritage. The intricate process involves numerous manual steps, requiring 30 or more stages and spanning 2 to 4 months to complete. It is an ideal choice for those who seek meticulously crafted, traditional Japanese textiles.
[Weaving Characteristics]
The warp threads (tate ito) are meticulously dyed using the traditional fermentation process, resulting in a deep, indigo shade. The technique of dyeing adds gradation to the fabric, distinguishing it from other indigo-dyed textiles. The arrangement of the warp threads, based on Kurume Kasuri's unique warping method known as "aramaki," allows the dyed gradations to be seamlessly translated into the woven patterns.
[Indigo Dyeing]
Kurume Kasuri's indigo dyeing follows the labor-intensive "fermentation vat" method. Its appeal lies in the subtle variations of color, which exude both resilience and sophistication. This dyeing method has historical roots dating back to the Kamakura period, where samurai wore a type of indigo called "kachiiro" beneath their armor. Indigo was valued not only for its flame-retardant, detoxifying, and hemostatic properties but also for the auspicious associations linked to "kachi," meaning victory. Its insect-repelling qualities also made it invaluable for outdoor activities such as farming and mountain work. Furthermore, its resistance to skin irritation and exceptional heat retention make it ideal for crafting clothing for infants.
