Kurume Kasuri is a traditional pre-dyed woven fabric representing Japan. It is produced by a vintage belt-driven power loom, where 20 looms are connected to a single motor. Founded in 1948, this Kurume Kasuri weaving workshop in Kurume City, Fukuoka Prefecture, has a rich history and specializes in creating intricately woven textiles.
[Characteristics of Kurume Kasuri]
Kurume Kasuri is known for its soft and delicate texture, similar to handwoven fabrics. The production process involves numerous hand-crafted steps, taking 2 to 4 months to complete over 30 processes. After weaving, the fabrics undergo a natural shrinking process of about 10% through hot-water treatment and air-drying.
[Weaving Features]
The fabric is woven using two different types of yarn: 40/2 for the warp (vertical threads) and 16/1 Nassler yarn for the weft (horizontal threads). The unique weaving technique called "chijimi-ori" creates subtle unevenness on the surface, giving it a slightly rough texture. This helps to improve breathability, making Kurume Kasuri ideal for summer clothing.
