[Kurume Kasuri Fabric]
A unique fabric woven on a retro belt-driven power loom system, consisting of 20 interconnected looms operated by a single motor. Established in 1948, Kurume Kasuri Orimono is a representative name in the realm of traditional pre-dyed Japanese fabrics. Notable for its soft texture akin to handwoven textiles, this craft requires an intricate, labor-intensive process spanning over 30 steps, taking 2 to 4 months to complete. It's an ideal choice for individuals who seek to create a cherished piece steeped in Japan's textile heritage.

[Weaving Characteristics]
Half of the warp threads (tateito) are naturally indigo-dyed. Kurume Kasuri employs the time-honored "fermentation dyeing" technique for its indigo dyeing, resulting in deep hues and minimal fading compared to conventional indigo dyeing. By introducing an additional step during dyeing, a gradation effect is achieved. This gradient, expressed through dyeing during the warp preparation technique unique to Kurume Kasuri, becomes an integral part of the woven pattern.

[Indigo Dyeing]
Kurume Kasuri's indigo dyeing adheres to the labor-intensive "fermentation dyeing" method known as "hakko-date." The resulting subtle variations in shades offer a charm that can evoke both robustness and elegance. During the Kamakura period, warriors adopted the practice of wearing a type of indigo called "kachiiro" under their armor. Indigo's associated qualities of inflammation reduction, detoxification, and wound healing contributed to its reputation as a symbol of good luck due to its connection to the word "kachi" (victory). Its insect-repellent properties made it useful for mountain and agricultural work, as well as for wedding kimono and bedding. It's also known for excellent heat retention and suitability for baby clothing.
