Kurume Kasuri is woven on retro belt-driven power looms from the Showa era, with twenty looms running from a single motor. Founded in 1948, this mill has long produced Kurume Kasuri, one of Japan's most representative yarn-dyed textiles. The fabric is known for its soft, handwoven-like texture. Because many processes are done manually, the production involves more than thirty steps and takes two to four months to complete. This material is ideal for those who wish to create special pieces using traditional Japanese textiles.

This fabric is dyed with genuine indigo using the traditional fermentation method, with each piece hand-dyed by artisans in indigo vats. The warp yarn is dyed in dark navy using chemical dye. The classic square check pattern is timeless and easy to use.

Kurume Kasuri indigo dyeing follows the"fermentation vat" method, the most labor-intensive and traditional technique. Indigo offers a wide range of expressions from dignified depth to refined softness through subtle color variations. In the Kamakura period, warriors wore *kachi-iro* (a deep indigo tone) beneath their armor. Indigo was believed to have anti-inflammatory, detoxifying, and hemostatic properties, and"kachi" (indigo) was associated with"victory." Indigo textiles were also valued for repelling insects and snakes, making them suitable for mountain and farm work, and were treasured as bridal belongings for the belief that"insects will not cling." Because indigo-dyed cotton retains heat well and is gentle on the skin, it has also been used for baby clothing.
