KURUME KASURI Fabric - 60/2 Chijimi Weaving Susutake Kinari

One retro Showa-era belt-type power loom, with twenty looms connected to a single motor, is in operation. It belongs to the Kurume Kasuri weaving mill, which was established in 1948. It represents a traditional Japanese fabric, dyed before weaving.

This fabric features a soft and delicate texture, reminiscent of handwoven textiles. The manufacturing process involves numerous manual steps, taking 2 to 4 months to complete over 30 stages. Once woven, the fabric undergoes a process of shrinkage by approximately 10% through hot water treatment and natural drying.

The mill also supports entrepreneurs, making it a perfect choice for those seeking to create meticulously crafted traditional Japanese textiles. The fabric is 100% cotton, and the weaving width is approximately 38 to 39 cm.

The vertical threads are 40/2, and the horizontal threads are 16/1 slub, woven using a unique "double-beam" technique in a flat weave known as "Chijimi-ori." It exhibits a slightly rough texture due to its subtle surface irregularities, and it is also called "sukka-ori" or "sakka-ori" (sukka fabric). The innovative combination of 40/2 and 60/2 threads creates a gentle textured effect in the "Chijimi-ori" style.
