Kurume Shima Ori is a traditional pre-dyed woven fabric produced using a retro belt-driven power loom system, where 20 machines are connected to a single motor. It was established in the 23rd year of the Showa era and is renowned as a representative of Japan's traditional pre-dyed woven textiles. The fabric is characterized by a soft and hand-woven-like texture. Its production involves numerous manual processes, taking 2 to 4 months and more than 30 steps to complete. It is the perfect fabric for those who wish to create a piece with great attention to detail.
[Weaving Features]
"Hanpu" refers to a heavyweight fabric woven with cotton or hemp in a plain weave. It was originally used as material for sails, hence the name "Hanpu" (sailcloth) in Japan. The fabric finds a wide range of applications, including bags, aprons, shoes, and chair upholstery. The thickness of Hanpu was previously categorized from 1 to 11 based on JIS standards, but this classification has been abolished. At Shimogawa Orimono, a unique standard for Hanpu has been set based on the fabric's compatibility with Kurume Kasuri looms.
[Thoughts Behind "Hampu"]
The term "Hampu" represents the pursuit of "pushing the limits." Special thick yarn known as "kakari-ito" used in Kurume Kasuri's tying process is employed as the warp in developing Hanpu fabric on Kurume Shima looms. The challenge was to weave a fabric that was traditionally believed to be beyond the capabilities of Kasuri looms while maintaining the characteristic soft texture of Kurume Kasuri and creating a thick and sturdy material. Through innovative measures such as creating original gears for the loom, they succeeded in weaving a fabric that defied the usual limitations. The concept is an image of venturing into the unknown and achieving success.
